The affected individual may develop soreness in throat but in some cases it may not cause any symptoms.
After receiving the infectious bacterium through sex, the person will not show any symptoms immediately. It may take 2-3 weeks or even more for the first symptoms to appear. For women, the infectious bacteria can cause pain while urinating, frequent vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, and pain while having sex. For some women, vagina may bleed after sex and for some others it can cause heavy bleeding between periods. Chlamydia infection should be treated with medications failing which it may spread to womb and in rare cases can cause pelvic inflammatory disease leading to miscarriage.
Generally men do not show any symptoms of Chlamydia in throat infection but some men may have foul smelling discharge from the penis and pain while urinating. In addition to the above symptoms affecting the genital area, the infection may spread to the throat causing sore throat and redness. For some people, it may cause difficulty in swallowing and hoarse voice. Sometimes it may cause fever and body pain following throat infection. You need to check with your doctor, if you have sore throat for more than a week and you have had unsafe sex. In very rare cases, if the infected semen gets in touch with eyes, it may cause conjunctivitis.
Chlamydia trachomatis is the bacterium that causes Chlamydia infection in your throat. Having unprotected oral sex is the major cause of getting this infection. Interchange of sexual fluids from one person to another is possible even without orgasm. The infectious bacteria can enter into the mouth while having oral sex.
Unlike other infectious diseases, Chlamydia cannot spread during hugging or kissing the affected person. There should be exchange of fluids for the infection to take place. Sharing of bath towels and toilet seats cannot pass on the infection to others. But sharing of sex toys that contains fluids of infected person can cause infection.
Chlamydia infection can be easily diagnosed by simple testing procedures. Urine sample of the infected person will show the presence of infectious bacteria. Throat swab can also be taken for identifying the infection. Swab test can also be taken from the vagina or from cervix region for women. For men swab test can be taken from the tip of the penis or urine analysis can be done.
Even if there are no symptoms, you can undergo testing if you suspect infection after having sex. You need to take the test within two weeks of having unsafe sex. You are reducing the risk of infection by testing and taking treatment early.
