We all cough to remove the unwanted substances from the lungs and from the air passages. People cough for several reasons and the basic purpose of coughing is to eliminate the mucous and phlegm that blocks the nasal passages. Take honey mixed with hot water for reducing the irritant cough. The dryness will fade by taking lemon tea. Avoid smoking when you have cough. Stay indoors and avoid going out in polluted environment. Wear mask in case you need to go out.
Treatment for cough should be in identifying the real root cause for the problem and not just giving medicines for eliminating the symptoms. Simple non infectious cough will get settled if you take cough suppressant for 2 or 3 days. In case of severe cough more than 3 weeks, you should consult the doctor for identifying the problem. Taking narcotic medicines will ease out the cough and facilitate sleep during night but it can be sedative. Cough due to viral infection should be treated with antibiotics.
